Hey, sorry Erik, I wasn't trying to beat on you. I agree with your statements, and especially with your conclusion about a '94 design trying to compete with ~'00 designs.
I get a little tired of the attitude that "Saabs are the best cars ever, tops in every regard", and was reacting to that, but I see that wasn't your point. Saabs may be a good value compared to other similar cars on the market, and thanks to severe depreciation, are an even better value used, but they aren't "the best".
I bought one, so obviously the strengths of the (SET in my case) outweighed it's weaknesses, at least at the time of purchase. For me, one of the strengths was price, i didn't want to tie up lots of money in a car, and got mine (used) for about what a stripper Neon would have run, not that I was considering the Neon!
If I had to do it again, though, knowing what I do now, I don't know that I would have bought the car. While I have been pleased with the utility and performance, it's handling is just so-so, and I have been extremely disapointed in the reliability. In fact, I just encouraged some friends who were looking to replace their beloved '89 900T _not_ to buy a newer Saab, because of the lack of reliability I've found.
