Mediocre fit & finish of base 9-3

I'm seriously pondering getting a base 5 door 9-3 manual (+leather+sunroof). I've always wanted a Saab, mostly for aesthetic reasons, but I'm also tired of automatics and am looking for something sportier.
The only thing stopping me is that I find the fit and finish of the base
9-3 offputting. Specifically, the interiour door handles, levers and locks
would seem to belong more on a Neon than a $37K car (Cdn). I'm currently
driving a 99' 2.8 Audi A6 quattro, which is quite luxurious by comparison,
and the competition--BMW, Audi A4/Passat/Volvo, while utilizing plastic, don't seem to come from the lowest bidder.
So, I was wondering if anyone felt the same
way initially, but got over it easily/eventually? I notice the SE has crome fittings.
I talked to the dealer, and it sounds like he's willing to get the SE ones
installed on the base (boy, they're expensive--$50 each x 4!). I'm not
too keen on the SE since I'll be mostly commuting and I'm concerned about
the SE's stiffness as well as the body skirts (for off road access to biking/hiking).
Has anyone replaced the handles? I noticed in the online catalogue it's
possible to get outrageously priced handles ($115US/pair), and I'm not sure
how good in reality they are.
