Based on the buzz I think your right that we probably won't see a 5-door 9-3 replacement although there might well be a 3-door. However, I sure would like to see another SAAB 5-door hatch (say a 9-5). I can tell you there is no way my parents would have bought their 9000 back in 97 if it didn't have a hatch. True they might cross over and own one station wagon (but not 2 as they do with 2 SAAB hatchbacks). Instead of two SAABs they would probably have at most one.
However, some of us don't want a wagon or a sedan. Moreover, without a hatch I would have to look a lot harder at other cars before buying a SAAB sedan simple because one compeling reason to buy is gone. So why should SAAB give up this market just because they offer a sedan?
Furthmore, in regard to the 9-5 we don't know how well a hatch version would have sold because there is none. Keep in mind that during the days of the 9000 there was a sedan version that did not sell very well at all compared to the hatch. In fact, it had a rather short production run. There is a market for a big safe 5-door hatchback and SAAB shouldn't turn away for it when they hold the market.
