Okay, you know where the airbox is. On the perimeter there are four screws to remove and one clamp to disengage in order to replace the airfilter. Instead of the K&N, you might want to try the ITG filter. You're right about the filter being a wash since the T7 actively controls the airmass flowing to and from the turbo. Think of the airfilter replacement as a preparation for an ECU upgrade.
The exhaust is a different story. I just had the Saab Sport Exhaust installed on my 9-3 MY2001 and I don't feel the difference in horsepower but the turbo spools up much quicker than before, especially when in transition, ie 50 - 70 MPH or 40 - 80 MPH, flooring the throttle in 3rd or 4th geear will snap your head back. Wasn't like that with the stock exhaust.
