6.5" speakers fit as long as they are not overly deep

Many people on this board speak highly of the Infinity Kappa 6.5" speakers, but they may be more than you want to spend (somewhere between $120-$150/pair on sale last time I checked). Any speaker with decent response characteristics will be a vast improvement over having nothing in the door speaker locations.
Last fall I installed 6.5" Kenwood KAC-1677 speakers in the doors following Richard Bevan's tips in the 9-3 Audio Guide in the FAQ section of this site. They are powered by a MTX 50Wx2 amp I installed in the same location as the Saab amp (I also have the 9-3 base so did not already have the Saab amp) and I am very happy with the improvement in sound. The Kenwood speakers listed for about $100/pair and I got them on sale for $50. So you can get much better sound with some good (but not top of the line) speakers.
You did not say if the amp you got is the actual Saab amp (as is used in the SE and Viggen). If it is, then as others have mentioned, that amp has a low-pass filter and only sends the mid-range and base signals to the door speakers. You will probably want to shop for 6.5" speakers with good base response since the high-frequency response will not be used and thus, is not as critical.
Odds are that the mounting holes on the new speakers will not line up with the mounting holes for the Saab speakers. If so, you will have to drill new holes as I did.
The other consideration is that the speaker wires going to the door speaker locations have a special connector plug on the end that will not conntect to aftermarket speakers. You have two choices here. You can either cut off the connector and solder on the connectors that come with the new speakers, or you can get an adapter at a car stereo store (I have seen these at Circuit City). The adapter I saw was labeled a speaker adapter for GM speaker connectors.
