...that might suit your wife just fine. Going from the standard 215/45-17 down to a 215/50-16 would provide a bit more wheel protection while matching the overall tire size almost exactly (about 0.6% speedometer error).
For my style of driving and autocrossing I prefer the stiffness of the shorter sidewall. I upgraded to 225/45-17 which does, incidentally, give an ever-so-slightly taller sidewall while greatly improving traction in all conditions. The wider tires do, however, exaggerate the torque/camber steer of the Viggen which some people (not me) have a big problem dealing with.
