Terry,
I recently traded a 92 9000S in for a 98 900SET with 28K miles, I have like you had lots of SAABS since the early 80's (81 900T, (2) 87 900S, 95 900S convertable, and the current 98 900SET).
The 9000 was the best of all of them. While it did not have the turbo the car road better, handled better, the brakes were superior, the room was great for the family (wife and two teenagers). Not much broke in 100K miles other than normal maintenance items.
The 900SET is a nice car, the power is good, the brakes are mushy, the ride is fair, doesn't handle with confidence, the frame is no where as solid as the 9000, and it is much more cramped. The quality seems to have decreased with the NG900 (and I presume the 9-3)I have had a bunch of little items like: SID replaced, clutch going already, alloy wheels that bend with the slightest bump, electric windows that come and go, various engine management componets needing to be replaced.
I'd go for another 9000 or 9-5
