I've owned a 1984 NG 900, a 1989 9000T and now, a 1999 9-3. The major difference in the 9000 and 9-3 is the interior size, as others have noted.
The power is great in the 9-3 and the handling is comparable to the 9K, but the feel is different. My modified 9K was only slightly faster than my stock 9-3.
I like the 9-3 steering better than the 9K, but then I didn't have an Aero, which may be different.
The quality on my 9-3 has been superior to my '89 9K, no question about it.
The only real complaint I have with the 9-3, and this applied to my 9K as well, is that there are too many rattles over bumps. Saabs don't seem to be as solid as other cars.
If I could buy a new 9K, I might prefer it over the 9-3. But I'd take a new 9-3 over a used 9K. If your 9K is in good condition, you may not want to trade it for a 9-3. As someone else said, drive a 9-5 as well.
