Mark:
The ground clearance without the car being lifted is very low. I was barely able to slide a drain pan under the vehicle. That being said it is not necessary to jack up the vehicle to change the oil and filter. Here's how I would proceed.
Loosen oil filter first (counterclockwise) as it's senseless in dropping the oil in the pan if you can't get the filter off.
Next, get yourself a 13mm 6 point socket or a long handled 13mm close end wrench.
1) The drain plug is on the opposite side of the oil pan from the filter (i.e., on the edge of the oil pan pointing toward the rear of the car). Correct? That is correct, drain plug points toward the rear of the vehicle.
2) To loosen it, I turn it counter-clockwise. Correct? Yes.
If you must get under the vehicle make sure you use sturdy jack stands in front. To get all the oil out the vehicle has to be level so that's why I would suggest not jacking her up !. Lastly, the plug and filter might be easier to loosen if the engine is fairly warm, just don't burn yourself with hot oil and or touch the exhaust pipes or the Cat converter.
Good Luck !.
