My rental car this week has been a Chevy Malibu. I must say that I'm impressed with this vehicle.
In some ways, this car is better than my 9-3. That may seem hard to believe, I realize. In particular, the Malibu is rattle free (at 25,000 miles) and feels solid. In part, this is probably due to the relatively soft suspension and the tires, but the Malibu handles well, in my limited experience with it. Maybe the chassis is stiffer and more modern than the 9-3's, allowing softer rates for the springs?
Even the little features on the Malibu are impressive and unexpected for this class of car, including map lights, radio with cassette play and CD, and several others.
The engine, a 3.1 liter V-6, is not exciting, but has plenty of torque. Throw a turbo on it and it would be a very pleasant engine.
We hear so many bad things about GM, so I was pleased to find that it is possible for them to build what seems to me to be a good car.
Don't get me wrong; I prefer my 9-3 to the Chevy for its engine, the interior, the hatchback and other things. But I think that what GM has done with a relatively inexpensive car like the Malibu bodes well for the future of Saab. I now have more confidence that the next 9-3 platform might be very good, and competitive with some of the best (German) cars out there.
Has anyone else driven the Malibu? What did you think of it?
