Good point about the two-stage bad news scenario you speculate was maybe coming from the dealer.
Say.....is a tolerance for machining something a basic two wrench (on 5) person could measure?
And again, on the rotor/pad replacement job.....on a scale of 5 wrenchs, what degree of difficulty would you say doing up the brakes is? 3? 4? with 5 being the most difficult and 1 the least - like changing a license plate frame ;-)
I'll give you my idea of difficulty: Even if it's a simple matter to drain out the coolant and replace it, the draincock is so difficult to get to, I just let the dealership do that work. So to me, even if the mechanics of a job are staightforward -taking things off/out and putting things back in/on again - in the case of changing out the coolant, access difficulty is a hurdle only overcome with patience, good lighting, a little anaerobic strength in some cases, and cut keyboard hands.
But it should be easy to tell whether you have enough to work with on a set of rotors. That's a measurement/knowledge/technique thing.
