Take the wheel off (that might even be optional depending on the wheel)
Measure the thickness of the solid part of the brake rotor facing you.
Subtract any thickness for grooves in the shiny part where the pads contact.
Compare that with the owner's manual specification for minimum thickness.
It's usually in millimeter, so a simple ruler works. If it's close, you
should get both pads and rotors replaced at the same time. The other reason
for replacing rotors would be if they are warped or cracked. Cracks are
obvious- it looks much like the way rubber looks when it dries and cracks.
Warpage would be evident when braking around town, like from 5mph to 0 at a
leisurly stoplight. You'd feel the pulsing / uneven braking.
