We have both the 9-3SE and a Saturn V6 wagon. Drive the 9-5 wagon and you'll know if you want one or not. When we were looking in 2000, the base and V6 9-5 wagon didn't handle well (to our tastes) and wasn't peppy enough. The current 9-5 has a much better suspension than the 2000 and 2001 IMHO. The 9-5 Aero is certainly the ultimate but we couldn't justify the 40K price.
The Saturn LW300 does 0-60 in 7.4 seconds and handles/rides great if you replace the horrible tires it comes with. It has much less body roll than the 2000 9-5 which was a big decision maker for me. I'm SO PLEASED that Saab added the Aero suspension to its current base models. That may have tipped the decision making scales right there.
I actually like the looks of the 9-5 from the front better and the Saturn from the rear better.
We actually take the LW300 on longer trips more often than the 9-3 because it's roomier and more comfortable. I don't mean to insult anybody. I absolutely love my 9-3 and would be tickled pink to get a 9-5 Aero. I was just being sensible when we got the Saturn. Our last one took a real beating and never broke. Trade-in was great too. (I wish I noticed, however, how bad the Saturn headrest is) And, yes, the Saab interior is far superior but not $20K superior to me.
Drive the 9-5 and see if you like it. Get a 2002 if you don't like body roll and get an Aero if you feel like splurging. If I dipped into savings, etc to get a 9-5 Aero, I'd actually keep our other two cars because we love them so much.
Best of luck Scott,
Bill
