1) Yes, my 2000 9-3 base model was already pre-wired for the door speakers. There was some debate on this here on the board because apparently some 1999 base 9-3 were not pre-wired. It seems from 2000 on this is always true. As I mentioned, the wire ends in the doors have a modular connector on them that you will have to clip off or get an adapter harness. These speaker wires in the door run to a connector tucked away behind the passenger footwell kick panel...ready to be connected to the Saab amp. You would just clip off this connector and run wires to the speaker connectors on your amp. Which leads to question (2).
2) A lot of people mount their amp somewhere in the hatch and run the wires along the edge of the floor up to the center console, but I didn't like the idea of having to work around the amp when I haul things in the hatch. So, I was determined to see if I could find an amp that would fit in the same place as the stock Saab amp...mounted on a metal bracket behind the center console kick-panel in the passenger footwell. The trick is that the Saab amp is very small and there are not many after-market amps that will fit. If you do find one that fits, it will not fit the special mounting holes for the Saab amp. You can, however, rig up your own mounting brackets if the amp will fit. This is what I did.
I used a MTX Road Thunder 2120 2x50w amp and it just barely fit. It is 9"x6"x2". The key dimensions to fit behind the plastic kick-panel are the 2" and 6" dimensions. You might be able to add another 1/8" to the 2" dimension and another 1/2" to the 6" dimension, but any more than that and you will have a very hard time getting the screw at the bottom of the kick-panel to fasten again.
I took some pictures of this, but have not had a chance to get them scanned in so I can post them here. In the meantime, I tried to give a detailed verbal write-up of what I did to mount the amp on the metal bracket behind the kick-panel. See the link below.
