I don't know all the technical ansers, but I 've found in my 5 Saabs, that the narrow tires (with studs here) and what seems to be a heavy front end, get the tires down through the soft snow & nto something they can grip on. Starting from a dead stop, the front seems to lower in the snow, gradually getting more grip as it "hunkers down."
I do have trouble on glare ice on our 20% grade driveway, but a running start will usually get me up it fine after a couple of tries.
Not technical, but my observations
My '70 95 wagon (NOT a 9-5 wagon) was the best, especially with the freewheel. Almost wish I hadn't sold it some days. ;-(
