Philip,

I test drove a BMW 325I convertible. Now the dealer was only letting me take it for 10 or so blocks, but in that time the engine lost power and a warning light came on. The salesman said that it was because BMW only puts half of the transmission fluid in the car when it is shipped. In others words, the car had not been properly prepared for any sort of driving. The salesman then told me that this car had already been sold. I felt terrible thinking that I might have damaged someone else's car. Needless to say, I have a very low opinion of that BMW dealership.

I suspect that the Saab you test drove may not have been properly checked before you test drove it. I test drove 9-3's about 8 times and at different dealerships with not problems.

I picked up my 2001 9-3SE convertible at the end of June. It now has about 3500 miles on it with only some squeaky brakes which the dealer is going to take care of. We took it on a trip to Las Vegas in August. Drove through Death Valley where the car said the outside temperature was 115 degrees. The A/C ran perfectly and the temperature gauge stayed half way up as always. We passed SUV's and Vans that were on the side of the rode with their hoods up.

Saabs have their problems just as other cars do. Check out some of the other bulletin boards for BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and whatever you are interested in. I believe you will find that all cars have their problems. The important thing is how well they deal with them.

Best wishes in your search.
