Just resting your foot lightly on the clutch petal can shorten the bearing life. The clutch does not have to be pushed down to be running the bearing.
So ones foot should be keep of the petal when not shifting. And as yoi state, one should not hold down the clutch at stop lights etc.
When you foot is off of the clutch, the bearing is not spinning on itself and ther is no wear. By holding the clutch down or lightly depressing it one can increase the wear on the bearing by a factor of one hundred. So the critical factor to long life is driver habits.
Simlar arguments can be made where the clutch wear of one driver vs another could vary by a factor of 100 as a result of slipping or riding the clutch, or 'power shifting'.
