Tempered glass is specifically heat treated so that the exterior glass surfaces are under compression. This makes the glass very strong. However, any defect, or scratch, or chip that penetrates the compressed glass surface will cause the tempered glass to shatter.
I would hazard a guess that the passanger window in you vehicle had a defect or a chip in the glass surface that weakened that glass. Then the change in air pressure from closing a door, or the increase in air pressure from the sun heating the interior of the car, or even the stress from the sun heating the glass surface or a truck driving near your car could have caused the glass to fail.
