Tempered glass windows are stronger because of the interal stesses that keep the surface under compression to avoid surface cracking. But if a crack does start, then the energy released from the internal tension, and the reverberating shock waves through the material can cause the whole thing to blow into small crystal like bits.
Spontaneous fractures are uncommon but do happen. A modern vehicle has air flow through the air box and rear vents. The pressure theory is a pile of crap.
I saw a rear station wagon window blow up just sitting in the sun.
Someone/something could have whacked you window. The intial blow if it penetrates the glass will cause the bits to blow in. If the glass deflected an object, then the object could/might create a surface flaw, and the window when rebounding outward could then pip at the flaw and bits could then suggest an outward flow of the bits. Not so simple.
