First off Saabs are as expensive as a similarly equipped BMW. I was in the market recently. A 325 stickers for $28 but when you add all the "ala cart" options a similarly equipped 325 is $36k out the door -- $5k more. I'd say it is BMW that mis-markets the 3 series as affordable.
Secondly Saabs don't discount their cars more than other manufactures and BMW doesn't discount at all. For example a loaded Maxima stickers for nearly $32k but I could drive away with one for $28k... almost exactly the same as Saab. Volvo was offering a $3500 rebate on the V40. Infiniti was offering a $6500 rebate on G20s.
And as far as the original post about depreciation, they don't depreciate more than most either. If you paid $28k for a 99 SE it is worth about $17k now. If you bought a new 99 Maxima for $28k it is worth... huh, $17k. You want to talk about depreciation then look at Audi; a $38 99 A4 is only worth about $19 now... ouch.
