My point is that a similarly equipped Saab and BMW might cost nearly the same, however, with Saab you can negotiate a discount, whereas with BMW they won't deal (rebate! what rebate?). I know I did it in December. A 9-3 SE conv for $35750 out the door, tax included and it was to my spec and had to come from the port in Georgia, not dealer stock. When I wanted the same deal for a BMW similarly equipped they said no can do.
But I also find BMW's system very complicated with too many choices (makes it hard to find "your" car anywhere). Also Leatherette as standard in a convertible is a joke to me. Saab did it right in those respects. But hte current 3 series has enjoyed an update since the 9-3. You can't get HID lights on a 9-3 or on board navigation or half a dozen choices in interior trim. Say what you will but people like choices when they can actually get them.
Additionally, BMW is a much better established marque in the US market. Where Saab was rebuilding their dealer network in the past couple of years BMW already had it in place. Having a 3 AND a 7 series gives prestige status to the car that Saab has a hard time matching, no matter what Saab does to the 9-5. The dealer network is better in most areas (including mine BMW 2 miles from my home, Saab 60 miles).
So either Saabs are over stickered or BMW's are over priced and only idiots buy them but the market dictates BMW is a more expensive car to buy.
