There is almost no activity on this BB with diesel engines.

I might be able to help a wee bit.

You did not post anything about the temperatures there. Your fuels should be getting winter additives to prevent gelling of the fuel in cold weather. But fuel can be bad. Get your fuel from a location that has lots of business, that way the fuel will not be old.

I do suspect that you have a fuel delivery or quality problem.

With some automotive diesels, the cams and fuel pump are operated by the timing belt. If the timing belt has slipped, then the injection timing goes very wrong, but worse, the valves can be bent when contacting the pistons. Something to consider. Never neglect to get scheduled timing belt replacments.

Your compression is not changing. So with the compression, if fuel is injected, it will burn. There is no ignition system to fail. Even if your glow plugs are defective, the engine should still start unless it is very cold.

I am suspicious that there is air getting into the fuel lines. Perhaps when the vehicle is left for a while, fuel is somehow being allowed to drain with air entering somewhere. Do you have any clear fuel lines near the engine to examine for air bubbles or pockets?

See the link below. It is for the VW TDI diesels. There are some posts on general diesel stuff and some good forums on power inprovements and engine maintenance. The fuel and lub stuff is interesting, but perhaps very boring if you are not interested in such.

Have you been using some diesel fuel additives. Thesee will keep the injectors clean, improve starting and the increase in cetane will make the engine run cleaner and smoother. But you may have access to much better fuels than those here.

You might have some water in the fuel system and filter. Some addatives are very good at dispersing water.

Have you run out of fuel lately, or almost run out. Have you had any service lately to the timing belt or fuel system/filter?

Does your fuel filter have a water drain valve?

Try and locate the fuse for the glow plugs and inspect it.

The fact that it runs well once it gets going does indicate that things are generally in good condition. With electronically controlled injectors and air mass meters, there is still a possibilty of electrical problems. Make sure that the air ducting in intact and that the vac lines are in place.

There is no substitute for experience. Many dealers are not very experienced with the diesels. Try to find some help if you cannot find something simple to set right. Do consider some fuel additives. Some fresh fuel from a trusted source might be a good idea if in doubt.
