Thank all of you for your responses. From all of my research it seems as though these cars are much like any other model: a few lemons; a few more with some significant problems; and the majority with few if any problems. I currently have an '01 Tahoe that I have yet to bond with (I have had the same problem with my Kenmore refrigerator!) and would like something more interesting/fun to drive but that I can also haul STUFF in. The Saab seems to have the most potential to meet that need. In terms of maintenance/repair cost I have some experience with european vehicles in that my wife drives a BMW (with a new one on order)as well as having owned a Volvo years ago. I would say in general that the BMW has been substantialy more expensive to maintain than the past American SUVs I have owned (brake rotors replaced with every pad replacement!!!). However, I have also found if you enjoy what you drive and it becomes personal the expense does not seem to matter as much.
