I was confronted by the same issue a few months back. Bascially, if you want total reliability, then get a Honda or Toyota. If you think you can live with potentially a bit less (remember that reliability is a statstics game) then you may consider the Saab. There's nothing else like the 9-3 for performance and utility. It's part sports car, part SUV, and part luxury sedan ... which gets 30mpg.
Yeah, some head gaskets may blow at around 50k and some inner axle joints may get worn. But with some reasonable monitoring of your car, you can catch all these and get them fixed (if you happen to fall on the probability curve that says you'll have those problems).
Personally, I ended up going used. I saved about $10k off the sticker and have a car that's virtually identical in performance to a new one. In some ways, it's better (eg., built in arm rest, rear heated seats, etc...). But best of all, I can do all sorts of upgrades on it with the $10k I saved. I already have the HP exhaust, so I'm only looking at ...
Viggen rescue kit
SAS swaybar
Koni shocks
Abbott ECU upgrade
(maybe some Viggen rims because I think they look great)
That's actually more like $3k w/o the rims. Another $1600 for an AAA warranty and I've got something EVEN BETTER than a new car. Add those mods with the factory warranty and you're screwed for sure.
