I recently purchased a 2001 9-3 SE with about 25k miles on it. This board has helped me sort out a few matters including muffling a number of rattles and I want to be sure to thank everyone for that help.
I've been obsessing on Saabs for the past several years and finally found myself in the market for a new car. I planned to buy a 99 off-lease 9-3, but the dealer had this 01 on his lot and gave me a reasonably good deal and I took the plunge.
I find that I like the car pretty much for the reasons I bought it - good trade-off between power and economy; unique personality; functionality of hatchback design and (of course) the coolest dashboard on the planet. My major disappointment was that the car rattled on any road that wasn't smooth and generated a fair amount of tire and wind noise. I also needed an armrest.
Thanks to suggestions on this board, I've pretty much solved the rattle problem. Initially, I adjusted the thumbscrews to tighten the hatchback's fit; taped the rear seat latches so the seatback fit tightly; placed a towel under the rear seat cushions to keep them from moving around and found that I still had rattles coming from the back.
Next, I attcked the rear deck lid. I placed rubber washers on the hinge pins which limited its lateral movement and then applied velcro strips to the ledge on which it rests to keep it from bouncing up and down. So far, so good. If the ratlling hasn't been eliminated, it has been reduced by 95%.
The tires are Pirellis which (looking at user feedback on Tire Rack's website)seem to have a reputation for being noisy. So when it's time for replacement tires, I'll try to find a quieter set. Suggestions?
What I don't seem to have an answer for is the wind noise. Most of my noise seems to come from the sunroof. I don't know if this is a design issue, but there seem to be a fair number of posters with wind noise concerns of one sort or another.
Sorry for the long post. This is an excellent forum. Thanks again.
