Want another "seat of the pants" theory to ponder? Totally unscientific?
How about when you switch from 92/93 down to 87 that you find yourself flooring it to regain the "fun to drive" that you liked in the 92/93 ---- and hence the initial reaction of "worse" fuel economy.
Then you get mentally accustomed to the lower fuel (just like you say the ECU does).
But if you could set the cruise control on a longer trip, say 500 -1,000 miles, where your right foot is not such a factor, the fuel economy results would be more "acceptable" right away.
Man, I hate using lower octane fuels in the 205 hp turbo, but last summer, when gas got out of control here in the USA, I forced myself to experiment.
I drop back one grade (to mid-grade) once the temps go consistently below 40F/5C. In Jan/Feb when the temps get 0F to plus 10 F, I'll go to 87 octane. I figure the air's so darn cold and in 24" of snow, wisdom says full-boost may not be the thing to do. My car starts easy w/87 in the cold, too.
Friends of mine at SAAB -- who do SAAB engine certification -- say that the major US oil companies : Shell, Marathon, Chevron, BP, Mobil, etc. have the same detergency grade to grade. Not necesssarily true with off-brands, and/or private labels.
now about private label fuels. Here in the Mid USA, we have MEIJER stores. I've been using their product for 10 years or better with NO fuel related problems.
Never had an injector problem since my 1991 9000 at over 125,000 miles. I pulled the injectors off that motor and had them checked. All were fine in spray pattern and flow rates.
Oh, yea, I throw in some STP gas treatment from time to time --- don't really know why, but I do...........
I try to use Chevron (w Techron) on cross country trips.
Here ends the ramblings...
