Our '01 9³ (185hp) calls for 89, I bet the Viggen calls for higher. If somebody wants to let me "borrow" their Viggen for a week or so I'll let you know (LOL).
I believe that the spark timing map is programmed for the gas that is called for in the manual. It doesn't just hunt for incipient knocking. The knock sensor can retard the timing from the map, but if you put in 105 octane, the stock system doesn't know how to advance the spark to take advantage of it. I know that's for all my cars except the 9³, & I suspect its true for that one, too. Anybody know for sure?
I have never had FI problems from gasoline, & I use all kinds of major-brand gas (I'm not loyal to a brand). I've used no-name brands I've never heard of before without problems, but I buy them occasionally, not regularly.
