Buddy I feel your pain. My clutch died at 16,800 miles, a 2001 SE I bought last May of 2001. Amazing!!! I hope Saab installs some better and tougher systems on their new 9-3s. Anyways, it was a headache for me too! However, if you push hard enough, Saab will replace it for free, as they did with me.
I have owned Infinitis, Lexus, etc and Saab must treat these issues better. My tranny blew on my RX300 at 18,000 miles, looked like my boat was too much for the Lex. However, with no hesitation, Lexus replaced the tranny at no cost to me, and gave me a nice ES300 as a loaner.
Anyways, here is my story:
My 9-3 convertible's clutch blew. I took it to DEEL SAAB. They first replaced two parts of the system thinking that would be enough. Of course, this was at no charge, and it took way too long, two weeks! After replacing a flywheel and hydraulic something, they then told me I have to pay $1700 to repair the clutch, since they found more problems. I of course was furious. I called Saab Customer Care, and they didn't help too much either. I had to scream to prove my point. However, the service rep at Deel Saab was always very respectful to me, as I was to him. It seemed it wasn't his fault, rather the fault of the dealership and SAAB USA. Anyways, after I demanded action or otherwise they'd hear from my attorney (whom I really diid speak with), suddenly I got a call back from the dealer saying they would cover the costs. One week, and a Saab 9-5 loaner later, I got my car back with a new clutch at no cost. It is really pathetic that Saab treats their customers like this. Maybe you'd expect this with Kia or something, but no way to treat a customer who purchased a $40,000 car. Saab should take a page from Infiniti's AND Lexus' Customer Satisfaction playbook, because the disgusting and insulting way they treated me will most likely lead me to purchase an Infiniti or Lexus rather than another Saab.
Good luck buddy. If it helps, tell Saab Customer Care that you spoke with JOSE NINO from Miami, Fl who has a 2001 9-3 SE convertible and that he had a similar case and that if they don't treat you they way they treated ME, that you will pursue legal action. There is no legal reason why they shouldn't cover your repair if they covered mine. You only have 1500 miles more than I do!!! SERIOUSLY!
Cheers!
