You can get a lot more info by looking in Richard Bevan's NG900/9-3 Audio Guide which you can find in the FAQ section of the home page of Saabnet. It has information on speakers sizes, hot to remove the door panel to get to the door speakers, etc.

Jeremy gave you the correct information on the sizes. On the door speaker locations, though, you might find that the mounting holes for the speakers you buy may not match up with the mounting holes already drilled into the opening in the doors (behind the door panel). If so, it is easy to drill new holes. (DO NOT try and remove the speaker grill from the door panel! It is built in to the door panel. You remove the whole door panel and the grill comes off with it. There is a hole in the sheet metal of the interior of the door right behind where the speaker grill would be when the door panel is on the door.)

The door speakers locations should be pre-wired in a 2001 9-3. (I'm assuming your 9-3 is the base model because if it is the SE there should already be speakers there.) Note that the speaker wires in the doors and in the dash have a special connector plug on the end which connects to the Saab OEM speakers but will not directly connect to the usual spade connectors on after-market speakers. You can either clip off off the special connector and solder female spade connectors to the wires or you can get an adapter at a car audio store to that will adapt the special Saab connector to female spade connectors to connect to the speaker. (Search this board for "speaker connector" for previous discussions on this and brands/model #s of adapters others have used.)
