Some 99's appear to have one, some do not. No way to tell without removing things.
The silencer is pressed into the aluminum hard pipe between the IC inlet and the turbo compressor discharge. Remove the hard pipe, remove the silencer, usually in pieces. Expect to find it oil soaked which is normal.
The silencer quiets the turbo whine noises, but is highly restrictive. Remove to get faster spool up and more power. Remember that restrictions = prssure drops = more heat and more more power required by the turbo compressor stage which means more turbine exhaust back pressure....
Same story for the throttle body transistion casting (TBTC). It needs some grinding of the step ID reduction at the small inlet it. You will get more power, and the reduction in turbulance creates more even cylinder charging which makes the engine run smoother, which almost feels like a reduction in power because it is more refined.
Remember with a K&N to never switch the filter end to end after removing it. The back end will always be darker, even after cleaning and oiling, after the filter gets used for a while. The air box is not symetrical end or end, after heat and service. The filter surround will conform to the box and will not fit properly when reversed. If you get this wrong, you get air leaks and dirt in the engine.
