I use Mobil Delvac 1 which is a 5W40 for our 95 Passat Diesel. So I have to get it shipped in, so it is on hand and I tried it inplace of the Mobil 10W30. Engine is smoother, quieter and my mpg's are much better. Improved 6% it seems. So a rather interesting comparison.
The 10W30 is good for a new tight engine and perhaps an xxW40 is really better for a mature engine with greater running clearances.
I have not kept this a secret, and have suggested that folks with engine over 100000 miles try a xxW40. If they don't notice improvements, what the problem? Its not like the xxW40 costs a bunch more than a xxW30.
A few others have confirmed the smoothness, but no confirmations of improved MPGs. In theory one would expect a thicker oil to hurt MPG's. So obviously there is a reduction of friction VS 10W30 that is more significant than increased viscous losses.
