They have learned that you need higher visocity oils to stand up to skooting along the autobahn a high speeds for long durations. The oil temps get higher than in service in our market. They have specs for visocity at higher temperatures. There are BMW's that need a 0or5W60, can't remember exactly.
Driving conditions can simply be more severe there than here.
In the US and Canada, we get 3W30 engergy conserving oils pushed at us because by spec'ing these oils for new vehicles, the auto manufactures were able to secure some cafe fuel consumption points without doing anything of real value. If you think that these oils were spec'd with the long term interests if the owners in mind, you are misimformed. There are some 5W20 oils been spec'd for new vehicles which is really insane.
Note that group III highly hydrocracked dyno oils cannot be marketed there like here. A Castrol FakeTec(tm) oil is not sold as a fully synthetic oil there.
