My 2000 9-3 base model also came with the OEM Michelin V-rated MXV4s. Fortunately I had a little better luck with them than you did. They lasted almost 40,000 miles, but the tread was getting pretty low by that point (not beyond the safety factor, but almost down to the tread wear bars).

The best price I could find locally on new MXV4s was about $140/tire so decided to check out other options. After much reading here and on TireRack, I ended up going with the H-rated Bridgestone Potenza RE-950. It received very good reviews on TireRack and supposedly holds up in dry and wet traction as the tread wears. Interestingly enough, the reviews made it sound almost equivalent to the MXV4s. I ended up getting them when the local Firestone dealer had them on sale, so I the price I got was as good as TireRack, if not better.

So, after running them now for almost 2,000 miles what do I think? The wet traction is very good. Dry traction is good, but maybe not quite as good as the MXV4s when they were new. (It's hard to remember exactly what they were like two summers ago.) Overall ride quality is pretty good. They don't seem quite as "smooth" as I remember the Michelins, but the RE-950s are fairly quiet and for almost half as much per tire as the MXV4s, I am happy with them (and should last about as long also).
