The second inquiry into this today. A person just emailed me for the same stuff, but I ain't the guru. This link was posted a while back on either the perf or 9³ board. I data-mine as much as possible, as most others do that read this site. That was a real juicy tid bit of information.

I am not sure if the slush box is the same as the NG900's, but we do know it is supplied by the same folks that supply to lexus/toyota. Therefore, we see the excellent build quality and smart sourceing for saab in this area.

Now for the torque limiting: If this is a hold over from 1994, how many FWD cars at that time was pumping out 185hp and 196lb-ft, let alone the HOT 9³'s. The trans just isn't spec'ed for it, most likely the valve body and bands, but poss torque conv and casting itself. We do know the manual can handle 230hp and 258ft-lb oem, but we don't see an auto in the vig. I can assume this is not just heresy , but the limit of the slush box.

lexus/toyota put out a lot more model changes than SAAB does. I very much prefer saab methodology, but I suspect this is to change to the industry standard 5yr cycle (not good for the environment, not good for owner, good for shareholders). I would think that once toyo revised their trans spec for a new model, saab could hardly incorp the new design w/ the sim to the ng and hardly spec upgrades to a somewhat outmoded box for the 9³. So they just soldiered on with what they got.

Just my theory, I could be wrong.

Oh, I just got to drive an 02 5dr se slush box today. Gaad, what a nice machine. Funny though, it seemed to have more body roll than the conv and the auto box, really slowed it down off the line. As we saw power braking would limit us to 200nm anyway, so I didn't try that. Sport mode was nice, but no substitute for the rowing the gears.

Nov 2003, I'm gonna be looking for a black viggen (01 or 02) that's been treated right, if anyone is listening.

later,

tony
