...Drove it last Friday at a private test-drive event and I have to say that I prefer the old 9-3. While there are some definite improvements with the 2003, notably the lack of torque steer and minimal turbo lag, there are a couple of annoying things about it. These are:
"A" pillar is kind of awkwardly placed--I found it tough to look out the right window for pedestrians at the sidewalk or oncoming traffic from the right.
Small rattles--on a brand new car!
Stock tires really suck--and I mean really suck. The car had Michelin Pilot HX and these did not go well at all. It gave me a general feeling of a lack of control, especially braking hard and accelerating from a standing start (particularly if you have to make a left or right turn at the same time).
Console changes--no more window controls in the center console, just the ignition. Also, the SID controls are no longer buttons, but a knob/dial system, which I found very distracting to play with while driving--thank God for those steering wheel controls.
The one I drove was a Linear model, so maybe the Arc and Vector will be better. Also, it was an auto. On the plus side, the 2003 does have a sportier feel behind the wheel--the car sits lower and you certainly feel it. There's also the auto-dimming feature on the rear-view mirror which is a nice touch. But if you love the your old 9-3, I'd say keep it--I'm keeping mine, which is also a '99.
