Oh boy, that's kind of insulting, huh? I'm sure you could get in contact with someone above your local dealer (Saab USA?) and nicely explain the situation to them to see if they'll help out or pay for it all. I think they'd work with you on this one.
Here's something else to think about- did you book the appointment while the car was still under warranty? It's kind of splitting hairs, but then again, so is not covering things 4 days out of warranty.
I can understand Saab taking a hard line on warranty stuff though. Because "It's only 4 days out of warranty!" can easily turn into "But it's only 6 months out of warranty!". Have to stop somewhere, and the end of warranty date seems good enough to me.
