"jimmy"'s post on the synchro problem is the unofficial diagnosis and the dealer is pursuing this angle in attempting to fix.
JimBlake, yes, I am suffering from commoner's disease in sayng the clutch is engaged... So yes, pushing the pedal down to disengage produces no change, the lever still hangs in reverse.
The real fuss here is the unpredictablility of the whole scenario. Dealer had it for two days, they reportedly drove both days and parked on an incline (almost identical to my driveway) as well as on the second day trying to induce after short drives or by shifting the tranny around. No bang drive or stuck shifter. Take the car home and the next morning we have the symptom. The next three days went fine, no problems. GYAAAAAAHHHHH. So here we are... Sticking in reverse with a big bang.
However, I did have something new sort of appear. Yesterday when I went to shift into reverse and the tranny didn't quite feel right. No biggie I thought, jumped into third, back down to fourth and then over to reverse (a quasi get the synchros in order routine...). When I went between fourth and reverse something didn't feel quite right so I then tried to come out of reverse and viola, we were stuck in reverse. The bang was very light but it happened still. Bearing this in mind I am trying to see if I can get it to do it again on demand.
I did try the overnight park with key in to allow sitting in neutral (even remembered to shut the radio off). As anticipated, no bang or other anomaly. Then again given the random regular occurrence, just could have been a good night for it.
So in summary, I guess I'm at the mercy of the dealer trying to reproduce. They are at least willing to stand up for the cause and try to get SAAB on board it sounds like (SAAB is certainly not doing anything screwy they can't just give up tranny parts/labor when no definitive problem source is available).
Toss any info in as always, but I guess I'll hang tight from here and blabber about it when it is finally resolved.
The new 03 93 looks pretty nice though...
