Joyce, did your car come with a manual? (Ours didn't; we had to ask for one!) If the '03's using GM's oil change monitor, then your oil changes will, in fact, vary (as KenD pointed out). The company I work for has an '01 Buick with the oil monitor, but I don't believe it was programmed for either syn oil or supercharged engines (an option we didn't get). The manual says the system is based on engine revolutions & operating temperature only, & can notify at less than 3k mi or more than 10k mi. There's also a warning that it doesn't monitor dirt or wear, & that the non-syn oil should be changed at least once every 12mos/10k mi. Since it's driven mostly hwy, we're out of warranty & using full-syn oil in a naturally aspirated, low-rev engine, we've gone over 14k mi before the owner couldn't stand it anymore & had to change the oil. I'm assuming GM's changed the programming to take into account the full-syn factory fill & the turbocharging, but look for those warnings in the manual to make sure the system doesn't take you beyond the warranty requirements.

TG, yes, both dino & syn oils today ARE much better than just a few yrs ago. And if you look at the M1 spec sheets, their 0W-30 has better cold flow & better hot viscosity than either their 5W-30 or 10W-30. It's a fantastic oil, & if I wasn't convinced that their 0W-40 was better for a turbocharged application I'd be using the 0W-30. Obviously, the specs are written as a baseline, which means any oil meeting them has got to be great, & any oil you grab at the gas station will meet that baseline. It's a shame there's no separate spec for syn oils, so we could really see how much better they are.

Cost/loss comparisons are relative, & the loss of my 9-3 would probably be equally financially devastating to me as GM's loss of 10s of millions would be to them. (Of course, I couldn't write-off my loss...)

So let me ask you this:
Why does MY bottle of Saab 5W-30 semi-syn have an API-SJ/ACEA A3/B3 rating? (Or is your "bottle of synthetic oil from Sweden" not Saab OE?)
