Yes, longer drain intervals is the primary difference. 229.3 is for the new "oil life monitor" vehicles, which allow for up to 30000 between changes. Sheet 229.1 was more like 15k, which is still not to shabby.

Although BMW uses Castrol, they do give their formal approval to other oil producers. I think the difference is more than that. For example, Lubro Moly 5W-40 has BMW approval, while their 0W-40 does not. BMW is just weird :-) Now they recommend 5W-30 even for their M-technic engines that used to be "Castrol RS 10W-60 **ONLY**"...

All I am saying is that Kendall makes really good oil. Not just motor oil, BTW. Their ATF is excellent. I had a huge problem with Mobil 1 ATF in one of my cars. Replacing with Kendall ATF made the tranny shift better than ever. Great stuff!
