Hey Dean,
I think it's a combination of driver/owner psychology to "go easy" initially, and the fact the ECU like everything needs 100-150 miles to map out.
SAAB engines im my opinion are "green" until about 7,000/7,500 miles, but that number could vary slightly. I guess it's dependent on how much care you take to wear-in. In my style, which errs to the conservative for at least the first 5,000 miles, then hold-on !! "T Xtreme G" is on the loose.
Some BB posters on the NG and 9/3 BB have felt that the car was "broke-in" @ 5,000 miles. I have not seen this in my multi SAAB ownership.
When I "break 'em in" this way, the next owner/owners down the road have pretty much trouble-free rides, and 300,000/400,000 comes up on the odometer with little mechanical issues.
Counting down the days until the new car arrives ??
