We reviewed the engine two years ago - showed cutaways and compared design details to the traditional Saab engine and contrasted them with GM standard practice. The Ecotec has Saab design all over it. We also pointed out how GM standard practice has improved the engine. This is a high efficiency engine - horsepower and torque ratings pretty well match those of the old 2.0 engine ... with 0.2 bar (3psi) less boost.
When presented in turbocharged form, the engine has:
die cast head, not sand cast
oil jets to cool the pistons
forged crank, not cast
unique pistons and rods
cam timing is different, balance shafts are different for 2.0 vs 2.2
intake manifold - naturally
I reported several years ago, shortly after the "global 4" was approved by GM Corporate, that plans were to replace the some dozen different 4 cylinder engines used corporate wide with this one. There was supposed to be a 1.8l version as well - hasn't seen light of day, yet - for Opel's more basic cars. I predicted at the time that Saab would be close to last to use it ... that was before I saw how good the engine is.
