1999 9 3 mods and information

OK, I have been lurking on the boards and trying to find these answers, as I know they are posted, just can't find them, so please bear with me.
I just bought a 1999 9 3 for a good deal. It is my 3rd Saab; had an old 99, still have a 1993 900s. Anyway:
How can I increase the performance of this car for LITLLE OR NO MONEY. I am broke from buying the damn thing. I have seen some posts on the bb re: a few mods, but cannot re-find them. Also, it seems as though this car's ride is much looser than my 900; don't trust it in the turns as much as the old car. Have snows on now; will perf improve greatly when I change tires in spring?
Next Q: my car make a HORRIBLE rattling, banging noise over bumps, only when the engine is very cold. sounds like something under or around the front suspension, and it goes away once the car is warm. Any feedback?
Is the drink holder under the SID an accident waiting to happen? I would assume the SID is expensive. Anyway to use this holder (lots of long trips with passengers) and protect the SID?
Lastly: my car is not an SE: is the radio upgrade worth it? Seems like way too much $ for a generic amp and mid randge speakers. Not stuck with going through Saab, am I, because of the ID system they have?
Thank you, know that is a lot to cram into one post.
