you want an extreme contact patch. Not necessarily foot print but effectiveness of contact. This is best achieved with a narrower and stiff (read: properly inflated) tire.
While Nokian, like many other makers, takes the simple approach to the car manual's recommended pressure +3 and +3+3, I would highly recommend reading the tire's sidewall and adhere more closely to its pressure guidelines.
As an example the Michelin Artic Alpin in a stock 205/55-16 size inflates to 44psi, far above the recommended 33psi of the owner's manual. And speaking from experience, you will definitely notice a performance difference in snow or rain with that much of a pressure variance!
Otherwise, yes you are correct in thinking of 36 front / 39 rear (if that is what the actual tire info reads). The rear is typically carrying less weight (another factor in the tire performance) thus the slightly higher pressure helps the tread achieve better grip.
Be sure to remember to reduce the pressure slightly (simply loose the +3-+3+3) once you reach warmer climates to save the tires and your teeth/vertebrae from premature wear.
