Garrison Keilor once said that SUV's were invented so that people could get stuck in deeper snow. In large part he is right. This is so because in most snow belt areas, people still do 99% of their driving on plowed, paved roads. Even experienced snow drivers, growing up around Buffalo in my case, know that the smartest thing to do is to just not drive in the heavy stuff while it is falling if one can avoid it until the road crews take care of it, to watch the weather radar to time trips, and when one has to do it, to know the limits of the vehicle, the tires, the traffic and one's own skill. In got into and out of Buffalo during last year's Christmas "blizzard" by watching the radar closely and without my snows on yet; we drove between the storms. Obviously a Saab or any other FWD drive vehicle that is low slung will bog down in heavy snow before a high clearance 4x4 will. The difference is not that much however for smaller snows, especially for low slung 4x4's. And, the 4x4 will not corner or stop any better than any other vehicle on snow or ice. I guess you have to ask yourself how often you REALLY need a 4x4. Will you have to climb slipper hills on a must go basis or a frequent basis or travel on back roads or just visit the supermarket and drive to work on paved roads? And remember, a 4x4 which can lock up differntials for real is has more ability to go through snow than some AWD in a low slung sedan. Just my 2 cents.
