My '99 9-3 SE seldom has problems in the snow. We have a 20% driveway. Yes, 20%. i drive it hard & play when it is safe to do so. I had previously some VERY used Gislaveds (185/15) with studs. Ok, call that basically studless. Only problems were in the most severe conditions. The only time I got stuck last year was in our record snowstorm when a big 4wd pickup forced me into the snow pushed off the side of the road. I think I could have negotiated that fine, except for the glaze ice underneath it. My wife's A-6 Quattro Audi on the "plowed" area couldn't pull me out because she was also slipping on the snow on top of glaze ice. On her car she had brand new studded Nokka's. Just shows to go ya that there are going to be conditions where almost nothing will work.
Today while driving around I saw a big Ute in a ditch with one wheel up in the air. Did my little heart good to cruise by in the Saab with those heated seats on while he dug away in the ditch.
This year I'm using Green Diamond tires. The jury is still out onthe ice, but in snow they're good and much more quiet than studs.
I hope this helps a bit. Let's hear it for Swedes & snow!
