While tort reform is needed in some areas of the country (Philadelphia). I'm a little leery on reforms the limit citizen's rights. NPR is correct...your insurance premiums from the late 90s were heavily invested in the tech sector. And now that the economy isn't so great - thank's George, insurance companies saw large losses in their investments. Their solution - raise rates. They can use lack of tort reform as an excuse but it's telling only 25% of the story. I too saw a large jump in my car insurance for my 99 9-3 from last year and I turned 25 yo this past year. Any reduction from turning 25 with no tickets or accidents was pretty much eliminated by their "across the board rate increases" - yes those are the exact words they used on the phone. The thing is...unlike other businesses, the insurance businesses never runs in the red.
