Much of the time tires will still work with reasonable results when rotating backwards.

The biggest side effect is typically in the wet as the tread will not "pump" water as effectively. Ditto for snow should the tire be rated as such (will not clean as effectively). If one routinely drives at elevated speeds or aggressively the the tire can also deteriorate more rapidly and with odd results since it is truly not designed to run that way (tread and carcass).

If you are simply commuting and the tire shows no signs of stress or damage (cupping, featherng, bulges, etc.) you could probably leave it as is.

Personally I would pull it off and go ahead with replacing the set of two if funds would permit. Knowing the car's speed potential and the forthcoming spring wetness would merit attention in my book.
