Wheel clunking-- am I gonna die?

My 1999 SE HO with 47500 miles just started making a worrying sound tonight, and I was wondering if you could tell me what it may be before I bring it in. Also, I want to know if I should take out a life insurance policy before I hit my brakes again...
Scenario: Deccelerating from about 45 mph, using brakes, downshifting, or simply lifting off the gas, evokes a series of seemingly wheel-speed related clunks: clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk etc. As the speedometer gets lower (35 or so) the clunks go away. This noise seems to be coming from my front right wheel.
Other possibly related symptoms: My brakes and/or suspension make a single clunk on accelerating from a stop, and another single clunk on decceleration from low (35 mph on down) speed.
Maybe important facts: Tonight is damn cold (23 F). My car sits for up to five days at a time between uses (I walk to work). It has been through many salty snowstorms, though I have washed it since the most recent. I have also done lots of donuts and drifts in snowy parking lots which may place strange stresses on things...
So...
What are the probable causes of this noise?
What do I have to tighten/replace to make it go away?
Are my wheels going to fall off (as a motorcyclist, I'm ok with up to two going at any one time ;) )?
As an aside, when I noticed the clunks, I was testing my newly completed (after 6 quality hours) TBTC modification. Pretty slick! Kudos to Dean et al for figuring this one out, it definitely makes a noticeable difference in smoothness to the acceleration.
Thanks for any thoughts you may have!
Best,
Lutfisk
