Well, note I said blot dry...never wipe dry.
Not to sound combative, but if that's true then he wasn't using a US made 100% cotton Cannon or Fieldcrest towel...or he was rubbing too hard...or his product was crap. I can press down pretty hard on my cars with one of my towels and not get noticeable swirls.
The reason(s) I don't use daiper cloth is that it doesn't allow any captured grit to be held away from the paint...you end up grinding grit into the paint as you wipe. And I'll garauntee that diaper cloth sold in the auto section of Wal-Mart has polyester in it, no matter what the bag says. Try this...take a corner of one of the diapers and rough it up a bit. Hold a lighter under it. If it balls up into little black globs, it's not 100% cotton and will seriously degrade your finish.
As always...this is not a perfect science and YMMV. If diapers are working for you then certainly continue to use them!
