Not much will help eliminate the first gear shredding potential, but newer rubber will definitely reduce the higher gear spinning. Plopping the new rubber on mine reduced wheel spin by maybe a third out of first gear and more as the gears progressed.

I wouldn't worry too much about side effects of the ECU upgrade. You should be able to get it tuned to taste and not incur a huge off the line penalty in the process. Not sure how much latitude one has here with the T5, but should be possible.

The biggest thing I had to do was adjust my driving style. My last car was no slouch but had no where near the low end punch (max torque was at 4500rpm with a limited slip diff to help ease it up too). The 9-3 with it's turbo rush and lower torque delivery totally changed my timing on application of power in turns and off the line. I'm still in the learning mode as I continually gain more power with the repairs/tweaks being made but I can definitely say I can manage it much better after a year of owning.

Then again I about kill myself when I slip back into the wife's Accord EX. Its dainty little shifter and clutch combined with 25% less power make it feel like a rubber band compared to the SAAB.

Definitely a different driving experience but addictive once the driver is seasoned to it!
